Strategic Assessment of Managed Markets (SAMM)

Strategic Assessment of Managed Markets (SAMM) is the first disease-based report series offering the information needed to build a bottom-up, city-by-city managed care strategy for individual drug brands. By providing key data on the top 50 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) and the top 5 health plans within those markets, SAMM offers an in-depth look at the prevalence to drug treated ratios for each MSA, the percent of those untreated who are insured/uninsured, formulary access with the top health plans in the market and how brands are performing compared to the national average.  With this information, pharmaceutical organizations can identify the key players within each regional market and better allocate resources for market growth and best return on investment.

Using this data, we devise differentiated strategies to drive prescription share and increase sales for each key brand in the study through the filters of formulary status and local treatment rates. In coordination with regional performance data, formulary data, and managed care environment indicators we can identify markets and MCOs of opportunity for key agents. Regional variability in prevalent and treated disease populations can identify markets of opportunity for overall market growth and promotional alignment.

Key Features

For each disease examined, the SAMM reports provide the following:

Dashboards of Key Tactical Data:

Analysis of the top 50 local U.S. markets:

  • Key dynamics within the MSA, including disease prevalence, treatment rate, and opportunity for penetration by MSA
  • Top 5 health plans within the MSA and the percent of lives they control in the market
  • MCO spend and copays for generic, preferred, and nonpreferred drugs
  • Formulary status of drugs within the MSA versus national average
  • Percentage of new prescriptions, total prescriptions, and dollar share of each drug in the MSA versus national average

Analysis of brand performance versus formulary status:

  • Tactical insights based on regional market stratification by performance and formulary status
  • Formulary status and restrictions in the top 10 MCOs
  • Top 5 MSAs where brand under-performs despite favorable formulary position
  • Top 5 MSAs where brand over-performs with favorable formulary position
  • Top 5 MSAs where brand over-performs despite poor formulary position
  • Top 5 MSAs where brand under-performs with poor formulary position
  • National market share and growth rate, and identification of MSAs showing sustained historical increases/decreases in performance

Analysis of the top 20 managed care organizations:

  • Control of key geographies by total lives and market penetration
  • Spend and copays for generic, preferred, and nonpreferred drugs
  • Formulary status and restrictions of dyslipidemia drugs
  • Proprietary score of plan restrictiveness

Proprietary Regional Epidemiology:

  • Disease prevalence in the top 50 MSAs
  • Number of prevalent lives with prescription drug coverage by MSA
  • Treatment rates by MSA versus national average
  • Number of untreated patients in each MSA with prescription drug coverage
